TALKING WITH A SCIENTIST: The mysteries of metamerism

Chronic pain syndromes caused by spinal problems affect 50% of the population in the USA, in Norway - 30%, in Spain - 15%, in Ukraine, almost everything. With a researcher, doctor and philanthropist Vladimir Bersenev, Victor Galasyuk, the president of the Ukrainian Association of the Club of Rome and a correspondent member of the World Academy of Science and Art, is talking.

Our hero was born in Estonia, worked for a long time in Switzerland, but most strongly connected his life with Ukraine.Here Vladimir lives, works, treats people and develops medical science.

As the head of fundamental research at the Kiev branch of the Ukrainian Research Institute of Clinical and Experimental Neurology and Psychiatry, our interlocutor has authored 20 patents. All this served as the basis for a new direction in medical science - metameric technologies of therapeutic effects.

His life is a real adventure novel, and he himself is a storehouse of worldly wisdom and an example of vitality. Huxley asked Dr. Bersenev to talk about his scientific research that has improved the lives of hundreds of thousands of people, about the future of medicine and how Ukraine will become a medical mecca.

Leonardo da Vinci wrote that the first childhood memory determines the life path of a person. The first thing I remember is a neurological examination. My head hurt, but I don’t remember the pain, but the examination is to the details. In addition, my father influenced the choice of profession. During the war, he received a gunshot fracture of the upper third of the thigh and was severely limp. When I was 14 years old, he said: "Become a neuropathologist."

I was born in Estonia in the city of Kuressaare on the island of Saaremaa, which since ancient times has attracted meteorites. There I grew up and went to study in Arkhangelsk, the most northern institute on the planet. Due to the Stalinist repressions and the “case of doctors”, many strong professors moved away from the capital, so I got a very good basic education. The requirements were strict: for example, until you personally, under the guidance of a senior comrade, take 20 births, you will not be signed off. After Arkhangelsk, I moved to Kiev, where I graduated from graduate school at the Kiev Institute of Physiology, and at the official invitation of the Ukrainian SSR government I stayed in Ukraine.

Question evolution 
The purpose of my research was to study the patterns of neurometameric innervation of the human body. Maps of somatic and autonomic innervation of the musculoskeletal system, internal organs, cardiovascular, immune and endocrine systems, and the skin were thoroughly analyzed.For almost half a century to create and improve this new scientific medical field, metamer reflexology has been combined with the simultaneous introduction of microdoses of drugs with comprehensive rehabilitation. A system of effective medical care for patients with chronic pain syndromes and stable pathological conditions in children has been created.

Metamerism is a direction in medicine, which is based on the diagnosis and treatment from the standpoint of the metameric structure of a person. Metamer (“metos” from Greek - “part”) is a part of the human body containing a segment of the nervous system through which the work of certain internal organs, muscles, blood vessels, and skin is ensured.

Metamerism of body tissues is a biological regularity. 
At birth, the baby has 33 paired territories (three head, eight cervical, five chest, seven abdominal, five lumbar, five sacral). Sometimes people have an inexplicably elegant long neck (extra vertebra), then one vertebra is absent in the lumbar or thoracic region. But the total will be invariably 33.

Each of these metamers has seven components: a dermatome (skin), a neurot (nerves), a vasotome (vessels), a sclerotome (skeleton), a pharynx (endocrine and immune systems), and myotome (muscles).

In the process of evolution, the human body has somewhat deviated from the metameric structure. In the early stages of embryo growth, metamer formation can be traced. The skeleton, muscle, vascular, excretory and nervous systems are metameric in the embryo. Metamerism can be traced in the formation of the vascular and lymphatic systems, in the tab of the innervation of internal organs.

In the structure of the spinal column, ribs, chest, in the distribution of intercostal muscles, roots of the spinal cord, spinal nerves and ganglia of the border sympathetic trunk, clearly expressed metamerism, including metamerism of the spinal muscles, is preserved.


The remaining parts of the body - arms, legs, head, abdominal and chest cavity, small pelvis and others - are different from each other. Over millions of years, evolution has fundamentally changed their structure, purpose and appearance. But the connection of the peripheral nervous system with the central one in these organs remained metameric.

The muscles of the skeleton with the development of the embryo have shifted from their origin. But no matter how the position of the muscle changes, its controlling nerve grows with it. That is why the nerve that supervises the muscle indicates where in the embryo this muscle originated.

Take the diaphragm, which is controlled by the nerve segments of the cervical spinal cord. A good example of how far the controlled organ can be from the metamer is the “diver injury”. If unsuccessful diving upside down, the cervical spine is damaged, which entails paralysis of the diaphragm with respiratory arrest (if the level of damage is segments C3 – C4 of the spinal cord).

Word treatment 
I am the author of 99 books, which are published in a total half-million circulation in Russian, Ukrainian, English. This is important because education plays a special role in disease prevention. Publications such as The Healer for the Third Age, The Healer for the Family, where a child with neurological insufficiency grows, Spine and Pain, SOS - Spondylarthrosis, Osteochondrosis, Spondylosis have been reprinted five times. These books help.

The main thing is early diagnosis and prevention. Metameric pain points appear two to three years before complaints. The identification of these points, as well as the nature of autonomic reflexes, allows one to diagnose in advance the occurrence of pathological conditions in the human body.


Particular attention should be paid to the age of 28-30 years, when the formation of a person ends and with his comprehensive examination, you can clearly predict the future state of health. For example, one of the most common diseases is coxarthrosis (a disease of the hip joint).So, metamer diagnostics allows a person to say as early as 30 years old: “Take care of the joints, otherwise you will have big problems with them in old age! Mountain tourism is not for you, if you want to play sports - brisk walking (two steps per second, two to three times a week for 40 minutes). ”

Back of the world

Evolutionarily, the oldest structure in man is the chord. At an early stage of the process of embryogenesis, it appears from the so-called Henser nodule. This is a kind of biological string that runs along the center of the vertebrae throughout the spine, enters the skull and is lost somewhere in the pituitary gland. This has not yet been precisely studied. Chord in the process of embryogenesis serves as an architect in the construction of the city. It controls the creation of the spinal cord, spine, provides an upright position for the future person.

By the time of birth, the chord disappears, having fulfilled its function, but its remains between the vertebrae turn into the pulpous nucleus, located in the center of each intervertebral disk. This is a semi-fluid that should forever remain in the center of the disk. It has no immunological tolerance, and its appearance outside the disc (hernia) is regarded as a foreign structure, as a result of which the immune system begins to produce antibodies against all discs. These are sluggish processes that continue for years and decades.

The second cause of osteochondrosis is sports. The intervertebral discs complete their formation at the age of 21–22 years. Up to this age, it is absolutely impossible to overload the spine. This applies to all power sports. A woman who has given birth before 21 years old will definitely have lumbar osteochondrosis, since during pregnancy the center of gravity moves, and the load on the disc increases sharply.An example is “24th Disc Syndrome,” as I called it. A man in his teens falls on his tailbone. There is also a disc between the sacrum and the coccyx. With this injury, the pulpous nucleus is exposed and the antigenic information is removed by the immune system. Production of antibodies against the remaining 23 discs begins. The pain after the fall goes away, but after a long time, young people aged about 35 years experience pain in the lumbar, cervical, and thoracic regions. An MRI scan identifies osteochondrosis. And very often a person does not even remember falling on the tailbone in childhood.

Also, the causes of the appearance of hernias of the intervertebral discs are the so-called fatal movements. An example is sharp, jerky movements with a turn. At this point, the disc ruptures, and through the gap, the pulpous nucleus moves beyond its limits, creating a hernia. As a rule, they press on the spinal ganglion; it “screams in pain” in the territory it controls. Most often, these problems occur in the 4th – 5th disk of the lumbar spine. Knowing the root causes, one can avoid their negative consequences.

Treatment without surgery 
Imagine that a person consists of 66 microstates, and the president of each of them is the spinal ganglion. He has full power over the three processes that make up almost all human diseases: sensory (sensations, including pain), reflex (muscle and vascular tone), trophic (metabolism, tissue nutrition). Most human diseases are metameric in nature. It is necessary to identify the affected metamer and focus on it therapeutic efforts.

First of all, it is necessary to resolve with patients the question of understanding the steady pathological condition that has developed. All tissues in the body, except for teeth, are able to regenerate. But the timing of the regeneration is different. After biting your tongue until blood, after a day you may not find the place of damage. The terms of the regeneration of damaged intervertebral discs are about two years. Just as pregnancy cannot be accelerated, biological processes of regeneration cannot be accelerated.

Metameric treatment is carried out as follows: the doctor punctures the compromised territory (metamer), that is, makes injections with a short thin needle from the lower back to the foot, from the back of the head to the wrist, etc. The doctor acts on the patient's gradient reflexogenic zones - at the points of maximum biological activity - microdoses biologically active drugs.


Thus, in fact, “building material” is introduced for the affected nerve structures, thereby improving and normalizing the work of the spinal ganglia (an accumulation of sensitive nerve cells located in the hole between adjacent vertebrae) - the main links in the structure of the neurometer.

As a result, sensory, reflex and trophic processes are normalized. As a result, the hernias resolve, the discs recover - slowly but surely. We treat each patient for about two years with repeated courses two to three times a year. The rest of the time you need to carry out an individual home treatment program.

Many years of experience in the application of the metamer method of treatment suggests a high clinical effect in most patients: remission of the disease in 56.4%, significant improvement in 37.3%, improvement in 6.1% of patients.

Cause and investigation 
We have been engaged in helping children with persistent pathological conditions for a long time. This is a delay in psycho-speech development, cerebral palsy, myopathy, etc. Statistics are depressing. 1993 - 61% of births in the country are pathological, in 1997 - 67%, in 2000 - 70%.

The reason for the pathological birth is most often not in obstetric care, the reason is in the family. There is a law in medicine - a bad fetus is born badly. I ask many young people the question: “Why does every second child with cerebral palsy have epilepsy in Slavic families who come to us? And why aren't there in Muslim families? ”This question leads to a dead end for everyone I ask. My opinion is that a Muslim woman is not familiar with alcohol and cigarettes.


It is difficult to communicate with families where a child with cerebral palsy is growing (this is usually an incomplete family). Once my friend, MP Anatoly Ermak, who died tragically afterwards, suggested creating a charity fund. So in 2003, the “Dr. Bersenev Charity Fund” was created, which has been working effectively and has been helping to treat children with disabilities so far. When adult patients see such children, not every one of them can endure it emotionally. Often they also help our little wards. The charity fund cooperates with the Ukrainian philantropic marketplace. In 2018, 55 children underwent 71 courses of treatment at the children's department for free 
our medical center.

Then whole families will come to us. I treated people from 60 countries of the world: the diseases are the same everywhere. Many patients prefer to be treated in other countries, including because they hide their state of health so as not to risk a career. Every day, foreign citizens from all over the world visit our clinic. And I think that Ukraine could attract a lot of such people.

European Health Resort 
Given the unique nature of Ukraine and its location, I believe that it could become a health resort for neighboring countries. The greatest attention should be paid to the problems of recovery, especially for children. Along the coast of rivers, lakes and seas, you need to build health camps, with different categories and costs.

Money does not cure 
The business began to intervene very strongly in medicine. And this, to put it mildly, is not very good. For example, in the United States, 250,000 disc herniations are performed annually. A few days after the operation, a person can return to the office, and what interests him in a year will not interest anyone. 70% of patients have complications. In the US, courts are littered with claims by patients for clinics.

Once the US Supreme Court turned to me with a proposal to become their expert. They wrote a letter to the library of the US Congress asking: “Who is involved in resolving such problems?” It turned out that the only scientific monograph on this subject was written by me. But, of course, they did not open the visa to me, because the strength of the American medical associations is very great.

It is easier for American doctors to operate a person without thinking about the long-term consequences. Then we work with such patients, there are very complex cases.

In general, in medicine, those industries are developing that require new devices. Diagnosis has also risen very much, even in Kiev, but the treatment hasn’t. Treatment is still carried out according to standards, despite the fact that each patient requires an individual approach.Chronic diseases are practically not treated. For example, a person has a hip joint pain, and doctors are waiting for an operation to be performed. But these problems can be diagnosed early and prevented.


Without portfolio 
Once I was offered to head the ministry, but I knew about it in advance and was ready to talk. When the proposition was voiced to me, I said: “I hope this is a joke?” - and the question was settled. But if I took such a position, I would focus primarily on the prevention of diseases and the development of early diagnosis. In general, several times in my life I was offered very serious positions, but I always refused. He regretted only once when he declined another offer. I made a report on metamerism at the World Health Organization.They have a tradition: when one specialist retires, he is looking for a successor. Then the position in the neurology sector was occupied by an Egyptian professor, and he invited me to continue his work. But I refused, because this is an official job: you must constantly be on business trips, and I want to treat people.

Child neurologist

Child neurologist specializes in the treatment of diseases associated with the central and peripheral nervous system affliction, as well as functional disorders of children.

Usually, during the first month after the child’s birth, doctors send parents to the compulsory consultation of a child neurologist, even if the child was born completely healthy and does not have any disorders related to the nervous system. Moreover, the regular follow-up visits are also necessary during the next stages of life.


The term “cerebral palsy” combines a group of syndromes resulting from underdevelopment or brain damage (often combined with spinal cord injury in the cervical spine) during the prenatal, intranatal and early postnatal periods.

Perinatal CNS involvement

Perinatal involvements of the central nervous system are those pathological conditions that arise under the influence of many negative factors affecting the growth and fetus development in the perinatal period.

Organic lesion of the central nervous system

Organic central nervous system lesions are a group of various neuropsychic disorders resulting from the influence of pathological factors upon the brain at different stages of ontogenetic development. This pathology has many behaviour options and various pathogenesis.

Birth trauma of cervical spine

During the birth the infant experiences a great physical exertion when passing through the maternal passages. The newborn’s skeletal system is different from the adult person skeletal system – it is characterized by special flexibility in order to go through this passage without consequences. Thus the newborn babies have an increased chance of receiving a birth trauma of cervical spine during the process of delivery.

Peripheral nervous system trauma

Peripheral nervous system birth trauma is the damage of nerve roots, nerve plexus, peripheral and cerebral nerves affected by an external mechanical agent during childbirth.

Psychoverbal development delay

In recent decades, more and more children have a diagnosis “Psychoverbal development delay”. The statistics are inexorable. And the sooner a psychoverbal development delay or speech delay is detected, the greater the chances for child’s treating are.

Muscle tone disorders

Muscle tone is a slight muscle tension, which is necessary for their quick inclusion in working condition. It is the level of tone that determines the readiness of the muscle complex to perform motor functions. For each period of child’s development there exist physiological standards of tonic activity.

Spinal amyotrophy

The spinal amyotrophies are genetic disorders of an anterior horn motor neurone disease; they are characterized by the progressive muscle weakness and twitching. Spinal amyotrophies are not characterized by sensational, motion coordination and oculomotor disorders. This is due to the spinal cord motoneurons affection.


Myopathies are hereditary diseases, which are based on the muscle fiber damage and, as a consequence, the emergence of a progressive musclular dystrophy (atrophy).


Myelopathy is a neurological term used to describe all kinds of spinal cord lesions. Myelopathy is usually a chronic disease.

Neurotic disorders

Among the mental disorders that occur in childhood, neurotic disorders account for 65%. Neurotic disorders (neuropathy, neurosis, neurasthenia, childish nervousness) in children manifest themself with a wide range of clinical symptoms, among which autonomic dysfunction and emotional disorders are the first.

Juvenile osteochondrosis

Juvenile (adolescent) osteochondrosis is a disease that is based on degenerative-dystrophic changes of intervertebral discs in adolescence. These changes are caused by the teens’ rapid growth, possible skeleton formation disorders, as well as inadequate physical activity on the growing spine. Osteochondrosis can develop in case of wearing a heavy bag on one shoulder and long sitting in an unnatural pose while studying.

The compulsive movement syndrome

The compulsive movement syndrome is a children’s nervous system disorder, which appears as a series of simple repeating motions. Such movements include finger sucking, nibbling, frequent blinking, wiggling, rocking or turning, grinding of teeth, shoulders twitching, forehead skin wrinkling, etc.

Psycho-Speech Delay in Genetic Diseases

With the development of a number of natural sciences (genetics, biochemistry, embryology, general biology, etc.), more and more importance is attached to genetic factors, which are considered to be the cause of more than half of cases of psycho-speech development disorders. Spinal osteochondrosis

Остеохондроз позвоночника — это хронический процесс дистрофии межпозвонковых дисков, проявляющийся снижением их эластичности и гидрофильности (диски как бы усыхают, уменьшается их высота). Из-за потери жидкости диски теряют свою амортизирующую функцию, и позвоночник уже не в силах выдерживать прежние нагрузки. Фиброзная оболочка диска истончается и повреждается, в ней возникают микротрещины и разрывы, через которые содержимое пульпозного ядра диска может выходить наружу.

Сervical spine osteochondrosis

Шейный отдел позвоночника — это наиболее уязвимая часть позвоночного столба,  что обусловлено анатомическими особенностями шейных позвонков. Позвонки шейного отдела отличаются повышенной мобильностью, они легко поддаются смещениям в результате нагрузок или травм, а также достаточно быстро подвергаются дегенеративно-дистрофическим изменениям. Чаще всего остеохондрозу шейного отдела позвоночника подвержены наиболее подвижные сегменты нижнешейного отдела.

Thoracic spine osteochondrosis

Остеохондроз в грудном отделе позвоночника встречается значительно реже, чем в пояснично-крестцовом и шейном отделах, но заслуживает отдельного описания. Грудной отдел позвоночника является наименее подвижным по сравнению с другими отделами и наиболее защищенным с помощью ребер и грудины. В данном отделе реже всего образуются выпячивания межпозвонковых дисков, и они редко достигают больших размеров.

Joints arthrosis —  is a widespread disease. It is more correct to call it osteoarthritis, because this disease affects not only the cartilaginous tissue of the joint, but also the bone. The main difference between arthrosis and arthritis is that disease is based not on the inflammation of the joint, but on the degenerative processes occurring in it. Arthrosis is manifested by the joint pain, aggravated by movement, and the development of stiffness in the damaged joint. In neglected cases, arthrosis leads to a complete mobility loss and patient’s disability.


Невралгия — это ярко выраженный симптом воспаления нерва. Представляет собой приступообразную острую, жгучую или тупую ноющую боль в зоне иннервации пораженного нерва. В переводе с греческого языка  этот термин обозначает «боль в нерве». Все функции при этом у нерва сохраняются.


Невропатии (нейропатии) – это собирательный неврологический термин, обозначающий различные дегенеративно-дистрофические поражения периферических нервов. Это обобщающее понятие, объединяющее многообразные формы и варианты поражений нервов, и это объясняет широкую распространенность данной патологии. Этот термин неоднозначный, и многие специалисты его применяют только для обозначения невоспалительных изменений нервов. В детской же неврологии под понятием «невропатия» подразумевается повышенная детская возбудимость в сочетании с утомляемостью.

Facial neuropathy

Невропатия лицевого нерва чаще всего возникает в результате переохлаждения, лицевой травмы, перенесенного инфекционного заболевания, стрессовых ситуаций, на фоне ослабленного иммунитета. Может развиться как осложнение отита, тимпанита, паротита, заболеваний зубов, диабета, перенесенной герпетической инфекции. Самым уязвимым участком лицевого нерва считается его отрезок, расположенный в узком извитом канале (в пирамидке височной кости) длиной около 3см.

Trifacial nerve neuropathy

Невропатия тройничного нерва чаще всего развивается после стоматологических процедур, протезирования, челюстно — лицевых операций или травм, а также в результате переохлаждения, перенесенных инфекций, опухолевых процессов.

Radial nerve neuropathy

Среди всех видов невропатий верхних конечностей самой распространенной является именно невропатия лучевого нерва. Невропатия может возникнуть после глубокого сна, если человек спал на твердой поверхности, положив при этом руку под голову.

Ulnar nerve neuropathy

Невропатия локтевого нерва проявляется в нарушении его функции в результате компрессии нервного ствола в узких костно-мышечных каналах в области локтевого сустава и на кисти или же в результате травмы (растяжение, надрыв локтевого нерва) при вывихах и подвывихах в локтевом суставе. Невропатия, возникшая при сдавлении нерва в кубитальном канале, известна еще под названием «синдром кубитального канала».

Median nerve neuropathy

Невропатия срединного нерва — это поражение срединного нерва, проявляющееся в возникновении чувствительных и двигательных расстройств в зоне его иннервации (в 1, 2 и 3 пальцах рук).

Sciatic nerve neuropathy

Невропатия седалищного нерва – одна из самых распространенных мононевропатий нижних конечностей. Она заключается в повреждении седалищного нерва и формировании ряда двигательных и чувствительных нарушений его функции.

Peroneal nerve neuropathy

Peroneal nerve neuropathy occurs in case of injuries or nerve trunk compression at any part of shin nerve division. This is the most common lower extremities neuropathy type.

Tibial nerve neuropathy

Невропатия большеберцового нерва часто наблюдается при переломах костей голени, вывихе голеностопного сустава, растяжении и повреждении связок стопы. Повторные спортивные травмы стопы, заболевания коленного и голеностопного сустава, нарушения обмена веществ и расстройства кровообращения нерва часто приводят к данному виду невропатии.
