Initial patient consultation (history taking, neurological examination and review of medical documentation) is the very first and most important step on the way to your recovery. It is during the initial visit that the doctor assesses the patient’s state of health, the degree of neurological deficit is established, a preliminary plan of the planned treatment is created. And, of course, the presence of the necessary conclusions of instrumental methods of examination (MRI, CT, X-ray, etc.) is an important point in the diagnosis of diseases of the nervous system and musculoskeletal system.
What documents you need to have upon receipt:
- MRI of the spine (level of examination depends on your complaints). If you are worried about pain in the lumbar region, legs – it is necessary to examine the lumbosacral spine. If you numb hands and discomfort in the cervical region – examine the cervical spine. For pains between the shoulder blades, in the thoracic region, an MRI scan of the thoracic spine is necessary. MRI of the brain is recommended to do with complaints of dizziness, pain in the head. The contraindication to MRI is the presence of metal implants, stents, clips, fixatives, electronic devices (pacemakers) in the body. It is also impossible to perform MRI diagnostics for patients who suffer from claustrophobia.
- Radiography of the spine (RG) is shown to clarify bone pathology, as well as in cases where MRI is contraindicated. For pain in the joints, limiting their mobility and deformation, it is recommended to undergo X-ray (RG) of a certain joint (or better, both symmetrical joints, for example, both hip or knee joints).
- Computed tomography (CT) is recommended when the pathology of bone structures (for example, with low information content of X-ray examination methods or when it is impossible to perform MRI).
If necessary, your doctor may recommend additional methods of examination: electroneuromyography (ENMG), Doppler ultrasound (UZDG) of the vessels of the head, neck or lower extremities, densitometry, and osteoscintigraphy. But all these methods of examination are carried out only on the recommendation of the attending doctor. He will also determine the need for additional expert consultations in case of a combined pathology: an endocrinologist, a phlebologist, a gynecologist, a urologist, a cardiologist, etc.
