Teens Lumbar Pain

Sometimes teenagers suffer from back pain. Most parents think that the child has pulled a muscle or is just tired. First of all, these are spine problems. Lumbar juvenile osteochondrosis bear a similar clinical picture to an adult disease.

Teens Lumbar Pain: the causes of pain, treatment, prevention

Every year the number of teens, who seek medical advice with back pain, is increasing. Many parents do not pay due attention to this, believing that the child exaggerates the symptoms, is capricious or think that lower back discomfort will disappear as he or she grows up. This approach to the problem can turn into a progressive disease and difficulties in your child’s everyday life.

Averagely, teen’s lumbar pain syndrome is manifested at the age of ten to sixteen -eighteen years. This is largely due to the fact that the child is actively growing; spending a lot of time in a sitting position in school and at home while doing lessons or sitting glued to the computer or on the contrary often take a lot of physical activity.

The development of all the spine structures ends only by 22 years, until it fully grows stronger. Therefore, it is very important to immediately diagnose the problems associated with back pain and modify them before the spine is formed finally.

What can be the cause teen’s lumbar pain?

Parents should remember that if a child has a lot of activities throughout the day, and at the end of the day he or she complains of a slight back pain – there is no reason to ring an alarm. The pain can indicate a light fatigue, which disappears after a good rest and gymnastics. But if the pain appears periodically or accompanies the child constantly – you need a specialized medical consultation.

Teen’s pain and cramps in the lower back can be caused by various factors. First of all, these are problems with the spine. Bad posture, long-term sitting position with a back bent, long-standing traumas – unless it shows pain sensations at once, it will make itself felt after a while.

Juvenile osteochondrosis has become quite common in recent decades. This disease is based on degenerative-dystrophic changes in intervertebral discs in adolescence. They are caused by teens’ rapid growth, disorders in the skeleton formation, as well as inadequate physical stress on the growing spine. Also, the development of osteochondrosis in children can be affected by the habits of carrying a heavy bag on one shoulder and sitting in an unnatural posture for a long time.

Aching, mild pain in the lower back is the main symptom of juvenile osteochondrosis of the lumbar spine. In addition, with such an osteochondrosis a restriction of mobility in the lumbar area, a volume movement’s decrease, a local imbalance in the muscle tone are observed with the child.

Lumbar juvenile osteochondrosis has a similar to an adult disease aspect. But still there are some features that make diagnosis difficult. For pain syndromes that arise in the background of lumbar osteochondrosis a blurred clinical aspect and unclear semiology are typical, which leads to difficulties in diagnosing.

In addition, the causes of teen’s back pain may be:

  • infections, visceral diseases (gastrointestinal tract, kidneys);
  • mismatched furniture, mattress and pillow;
  • muscular overstrain after physical training;
  • sedentary lifestyle;
  • menstrual pain in girls;
  • Obesity (overweight gives an additional load on the spine).

Prevention of teen’s lumbar pain

Since early childhood your kid needs lumbar preventive treatment. Children do not care their posture, position of their backs in a sitting pose, the timely execution of daily physical exercises, and so on. Usually, this business falls on their parents’ shoulders.

One of the main pledges of your child’s healthy back is correct physical activity. Correct does not mean excessive or too intense. In order to maintain the spine in good shape a systematic daily physical exercises are sufficient. They were right to keep us telling at school: “Health is OK – thanks daily physical!”

The first thing you need to know is that exercises need to be mastered gradually, methodically increasing the load, especially if the child is not used to regular physical activity. It takes 10-15 minutes, no more, but preferably 2 times a day (in the morning and in the evening).

Give due attention to the selection of furniture. Ideally, if the seat of the chair rises above the floor on 42-53 cm and the surface of the seat is proportional to your bottom. The back should fits to the physiological bends of the back. The height of the table should correspond to the anthropological characteristics of the body, usually it equals to 75 cm.

The mattress should be medium hard, have the ability to easily adapt to the shape of the body without bending. The cushion should be such that the head does not fall back to the ceiling and does not tilt in the opposite direction.

You must be careful that the child does not wear a heavy bag on one shoulder. It is better if the cargo is distributed on both sides, or even better not to overload the child before the final spine formation, that is, until 22 years. This does not mean that the spine should not be trained at all, but give the child adequate relative load according to the age and constitution.

Also, it is very important to teach the child to lift weights properly, avoid hypothermia, change the body posture while studying, do not sit in one position for a long time. Pay attention to the child’s nutrition – it should be balanced, diverse, protein-rich, calcium-rich, vitamins and trace substances-rich that are so necessary for proper skeleton growth.

How to treat lumbar pain?

If your child complains of back pain – do not delay with a specialized consultation. As statistics shows, the earlier the back disease is diagnosed and the earlier treatment is started, the more efficient and quicker the recovery is.

Often, parents mistakenly refer lumbar pain to visceral diseases; therefore, to prevent medication which has no use for treatment, first of all you need a specialized consultation with a neurologist.

Treatment of juvenile osteochondrosis, bad posture or trauma after-effect must be complex and long-lasting. This is a time-taking and important process, because it directly affects the further harmonious development of the entire child’s body and health. Treatment first of all should begin with a child’s lifestyle correction and body weight.

In “Bersenev’s Medical Center” the unique metameric therapy is used for treatment of juvenile osteochondrosis. Our specialists develop an individual curative program for each child. All procedures are carried out in a certain sequence and only according to the physician directions.

In our clinic we conduct metameric treatment sessions, which are multiple punctures of certain zones with neurotrophic medication. As a result of this therapy, sensory, reflex and trophic disorders are normalized in this metamer. Thus, the treatment of osteochondrosis and regeneration of damaged intervertebral discs are performed.

The complex treatment program also includes metameric point massage, which directly affects the damaged area.

Postural disorder treatment is also performed by metameric approach. For each child, the doctors of our clinic develop an individual curative program of posture correction and its prevention, which includes drug-free and medicated methods of exposure.

Our specialists’ decades of experience shows that paravertebral metameric point massage, which is performed in the “Bersenev’s Medical Center” by specialists (with further parents training to this technique), is highly effective.

The doctor provides recommendations on the treatment and motion organization of the child, providing adequate nutrition and good fit of shoes. Performing all the doctor recommendations, the parents and child will do their best to form the correct motor development and a mature pectoral muscle sling.

Since the recovery rate of vertebral structures depends on the rate of biological and physiological processes in the body, it is highly recommended that you consult a doctor immediately with the first symptoms appearance. To set up an appointment with a neurologist, please call the children’s department (044) 272-11-82 or contact center (044) 238-22-31.
