What is metamerism and the metameric treatment method?

The human body is a complex, intricately coordinated system in which every element is inextricably linked to the nervous system. To understand how chronic pain arises and how to treat it effectively, modern medicine turns to a fundamental biological principle—metamerism.

What is metamerism and how is the human body structured?

Metamerism is a type of body structure characterized by the sequential arrangement of identical or similar segments (metamers). This pattern is common to all vertebrates and the vast majority of invertebrates.

Про метамерію

Structure of the cerebrospinal nervous system of a human embryo. 32nd day of development, length—10.2 mm. (Toldt, 1934, p. 912).

The human body consists of 33 metamers. The foundation of this structure is laid as early as the 32nd day of human embryonic development (when the embryo is only 10.2 mm long). Each such metamer is a complete segment and consists of seven interconnected tissues:

  • Ectoderm-dermatome (skin and its derivatives);
  • Neuroectoderm (nervous system);
  • Mesoderm-azot (arteries, veins, and lymphatic vessels);
  • Sclerotome (skeletal region, vertebrae, joints);
  • Myotome (skeletal and smooth muscles);
  • Endoderm-enteroderm (internal organs);
  • Gloom (endocrine and immune systems).

The main metameric structure is the spinal cord, its nerve roots, and the spinal ganglia, located in the openings between adjacent vertebrae. Each neuron in the human body has a clearly defined area of control (innervation) across all seven structures that make up a given metamer.

That is why, if a vertebra or disc (sclerotome) is damaged, the signal along the nerve endings (neurotome) is inevitably transmitted to the associated muscles (causing a spasm) or to the skin (resulting in pain and numbness).

History and Scientific Basis

лікар Володимир Андрійович Берсенєв

The author of the metameric method of therapeutic action is Vladimir Andriyovych Bersenev, Honored Doctor of Ukraine and a neurologist of the highest category.

The development of the method was preceded by many years of fundamental research conducted at the Kyiv branch of the Ukrainian Research Institute of Clinical and Experimental Neurology and Psychiatry under the leadership of Dr. V. A. Bersenyev in the 1980s and 1990s.

The results of the dedicated work of this team of scientists made it possible to establish a completely new field in medical science. The researchers succeeded in generalizing the patterns of metameric innervation throughout the entire body—from the skin to the immune system. V. A. Bersenev’s monographs *Metameria* and *Applied Metameria*, as well as over a hundred scientific articles, are devoted to this topic.

The Essence of the Metameric Method of Treatment

Traditional medicine often attempts to treat symptoms in isolation: ointments are used to relieve muscle pain, pills are used to suppress inflammation, and in cases of a herniated disc, risky surgery is recommended.

The metameric method works fundamentally differently. The treatment alleviates chronic pain and restores the nervous system through targeted action on the entire metamer as a single unit.

The technology is based on metameric microinjections. Therapeutic components (a complex of amino acids) are injected with ultra-fine needles precisely into the areas of the metameric receptors. This allows us to:

  • Address the root cause: Restore the function of nerve endings and trigger the natural regeneration process in damaged areas.
  • Eliminate persistent pain: Normalize the transmission of nerve impulses and relieve reflex muscle spasms.
  • Restore tissue nutrition: Improve blood microcirculation and metabolism at the level of a specific spinal segment.

Useful information for adults:

Thanks to fundamental research, a technology has been developed to effectively help patients with chronic pain syndromes associated with musculoskeletal disorders. Metameric microinjections act directly on receptors, bypassing the gastrointestinal tract. This is an effective and scientifically proven alternative to surgical intervention for osteochondrosis, protrusions, and hernias.

For more details on treatment programs, see the section on metameric treatment for adults.

Safety and Systemic Effects on the Body

Since the nervous system controls all organs, metameric therapy improves the functioning of the cardiovascular system, lungs, and gastrointestinal tract, which are connected to the affected segment.

Thanks to minimal medication use and the targeted administration of microdoses of drugs, the method is completely safe and minimally invasive. It has no toxic effects on the liver or kidneys, allowing it to be successfully used for patients of any age.

Important for parents:

Metameric technology provides effective treatment for children with neurological deficits whose conditions were previously considered incurable. The gentle stimulation of neurometamers helps restore damaged nerve cells, which is critical for a child’s proper development from the first months of life.

You can learn more about treatment experiences for developmental delays and cerebral palsy in the section on metameric treatment for children.

Dr. Bersenev’s metameric method has proven that even in cases of severe, advanced pathologies of the nervous system and spine, the body is capable of self-healing. The key is to provide it with the correct, scientifically grounded therapeutic stimulus.
