The scientists from the University Clinic of Northern Norway conducted an interesting experiment, which shows the effect of smoking on the pain sensitivity level. Until now, there have been contradictory opinions in medicine about this – some scientists have argued that smoking reduces pain sensitivity, while others have proven the opposite. More than 10 thousand people took part in the large-scale research: 22.1% of women and 18.8% of men were active smokers, and 38.6% of women and 46.8% of men, who’ve already given up smoking. Tolerability to pain was assessed with a test using iced water.
As a result, it was found that the experienced smokers regardless of age suffered pain the worst, followed by those who had already quit smoking. But people who had never smoked had the highest pain limit compared to others. According to scientists, the constant consumption of nicotine causes a long-term effect that increases pain sensitivity.
