The sciatic nerve neuropathy is one of the most common mononeuropathies of the lower extremities. It consists of sciatic nerve injury and the formation of its motor and sensory disorders. Sciatic nerve neuropathy is characterized by acute, lightning pain on the back hip surface, knee flexion weakening, shin and foot numbness, foot and fingers mioparesis, and plantar and Achilles reflexes decrease.
Sciatic nerve injury occurs as a result of pelvic or femoral bones fractures, cut or avulsed wounds, unsuccessfully conducted intramuscular injection. A sciatic nerve compression is also possible by piriformis syndrome, prolonged immobilization, hematomas and tumours.
The most representative feature of sciatic nerve neuropathy is a specific pain called ischialgia. The pain spreads from the buttock along the back hip surface, radiating along the back-outer leg and foot surface, reaching the fingertips.
