Neuralgia is a severe reaction of nerve inflammation. It is paroxysmal, acute, burning or dull aching pain in the affected nerve innervation area.
Translated from the Greek, this term means “pain in the nerve.” All the nerve functions are preserved.
Causes of neuralgia
Such disease as neuralgia does not arise by itself; it always appears secondary, so it is extremely important to establish its causes.
The possible causes of neuralgia may be intoxication, inflammatory diseases, tumours, trauma, compression, stress and demyelinating processes. Neuralgia can also develop due to diabetes, influenza, tuberculosis, metabolic imbalance of vitamin B complex, allergies, and various spine disorders.
An additional risk factor for the development of neuralgia is alcohol abuse.
Symptoms of neuralgia
The symptoms of neuralgia in most cases develop sharply, paroxysmally, after physical, emotional stress or hypothermia.
The basic symptom of neuralgia is a significant pain along the nerve.
The clinical findings are characterized by vegetative disorders in the form of skin redness and swelling.
In addition to severe pain, patients also complain of sensitivity disorder in the form of hyper- and hypoesthesia (i.e. sensitivity increase or decrease). The affected area becomes very sensitive to touch, which is also perceived as a pain.
There distinguished many types of neuralgias in medical practice; their classification is based on anatomical features and on the damaged nerve location.
The most common types of neuralgia are trigeminal nerve neuralgia, intercostal neuralgia, occipital and glossopharyngeal nerves neuralgia, and sphenopalatine neuralgia.
Trigeminal nerve neuralgia is characterized by acute pain along the affected nerve branch on the face. Women over 40 are more often exposed to this disease. Hypothermia, colds and diseases of the ENT-organs, transmitted herpetic infection, facial trauma and even abnormal occlusion can contribute to this disease.
Quite often doctors have to deal with such disease as intercostal neuralgia. This type of neuralgia is characterized by a sharp ribs pain, which is aggravated by coughing, sneezing and movement. It often occurs after the herpes zoster (the so-called postherpetic neuralgia) or against the background of thoracic spine osteochondrosis.
Glossopharyngeal nerve neuralgia is characterized by pain attacks in the pharynx area with spreading to the ear and lower jaw.
Occipital nerve neuralgia is manifested by severe pain in the occipital area and often occurs against the background of cervical spine osteochondrosis.
Sphenopalatine neuralgia is less common than the above-mentioned neuralgia, but its attack is very difficult. It begins unexpectedly, most often at night, and can last from several hours to two days. In this case, burning, arching pains cover the palate, temples, eye area, neck, extending further towards the hands.
Now, having figured out what neuralgia is, let’s move on to the question of their treatment.
The diagnostics of neuralgia is based on patient complaints and clinical neurological examination. An experienced neurologist should identify the cause of neuralgia and its further treatment..
In general, the prescribed medications can only deaden the pain for a while, and the inflammatory process thus assumes a chronic form, aggravating the course of disease.
Specialists of the “Bersenev’s Medical Centre” apply the unique metameric method of neuralgia treatment developed by Volodymyr Andriiovych Bersenev; this method has proved its effectiveness for several decades.
In our clinic you will receive the effective medical treatment based on the principles of metameric medicine.
The neuralgia treatment method is based both on a direct therapeutic intervention on the affected nerve and the corresponding spine region. Thus, it is possible to relieve the pain phenomenon, eliminate inflammation and swelling of the damaged nerve, and restore neuromuscular conduction. The treatment is carried out strictly according to the metameric principle.
The doctors of the “Bersenev’s Medical Centre” know the ways of neuralgia treatment, using a comprehensive individual approach to each patient.
