It is advisable to examine a pediatric neurologist at 1, 3.6, 12 months, and then at 3 years old, when the child undergoes a medical examination before starting a kindergarten visit. But often parents neglect to see a neurologist, citing the absence of complaints. Neurologist Vladislava Kulik spoke about why a visit to a pediatric neurologist should not be postponed and why it is necessary.

Vladislava Kulik, candidate of medical sciences, pediatric neurologist of the highest category, chief physician of the pediatric department

1. Why should a neurologist examine a child up to one year old 4 times?

  A neurologist is a doctor who evaluates the physical, psycho-emotional and motor development of a child. After the birth of a child, the nervous system is still immature. During the first year of life, intensive maturation of the structures of the child’s brain continues. The children’s neurologist monitors the compliance of this process with the normal pace of development. Most of the disorders (delays) in brain formation at this stage of a child’s life are the result of complications during pregnancy and / or the process of childbirth. Risk factors include the threat of termination of pregnancy, the presence of somatic or infectious pathology in the mother, and bad habits during pregnancy. It is also important how the birth took place – naturally or by cesarean section, whether the child suffered hypoxia (intrauterine oxygen deprivation) and a number of other issues that need to be taken into account by a neurologist when monitoring the development of the child. Timely detection of developmental delay makes it possible to prevent the formation of a persistent pathological condition.

2. What exactly interests a neurologist if we are talking about a baby of infancy, that is, up to a year?

    First of all, the neurologist assesses the physical development of the child – height, weight, chest and head circumference, fontanelle condition. Today, parents are often skeptical about the tables and charts of the child’s weight gain and height, the conditional dates for when the child should start holding his head, sit down, etc. Of course, each child is individual and develops at its own pace. And a lot here depends on the genetic predisposition (that is, on the parents). But often behind what parents call a child’s “slowness” can hide a number of neurological disorders. An experienced neurologist will detect the problem in time, prescribe additional examinations and effective treatment.

    During the examination, muscle tone, reflexes, pathological signs are also assessed. It is no less important for the doctor how a child crawls, stands, walks. For example, finger-walking, which is often underestimated by parents, can be a symptom of a neurological disorder. Also important is the emotional development of the child, how he reacts to his mother, how he interacts with her, whether he follows the toy with his eyes, etc.

3. What should be on the alert for parents that should definitely be mentioned?

  According to Dr. Vladimir Bersenev, no one will provide better care than relatives. It is the mother who is the main inspirer and the harshest critic of her child. But there are cases when mother’s experiences are not groundless.

You must definitely tell your doctor if:

  • – the child does not sleep well (falls asleep for a long time and hard, behaves restlessly in sleep, waking up crying for a long time)
  • – profuse regurgitation more than an hour after feeding
  • – throwing the head back during sleep
  • – unwillingness to lie on your stomach;
  • – increased sweating of the head and limbs during sleep;
  • – tremor of the limbs and / or chin, flinching;
  • – discoloration of the skin (cyanosis or marbling of the skin);
  • – lack of reaction to sound;
  • – lack of humming, onomatopoeia.

4. And what about children over 1 year old. What should mom pay attention to?

    The key to successful treatment is timely diagnosis. According to the medical protocol, after a year and up to three – examination by a neurologist is optional. And therefore we regularly encounter a situation when it is time for a child to go to kindergarten, and during the examination, a neurologist diagnoses a delay in psycho-speech development or autistic traits. Parents lose time, and the child is forced to experience difficulties in social interaction in the children’s team.

What should alert mom:

  1.  – The child’s lack of interest in the game (children often use toys for other purposes, for example, they simply line up cars in one row).
  2. – Violation of communication (the child does not respond to his name, does not fulfill simple requests (bring, show)
  3. – There is no pointing gesture, the child cannot repeat the simple movements of an adult).
  4. – Prolonged tantrums of the child.
  5. – Sleep disturbances, appetite disturbances, marked selectivity in food.

5. What are the methods of treating neurological diseases in children?

    Depends on the nature of the violations. In the case of autism, for example, first of all, the child and parents need to work with a psychologist, defectologist, speech therapist. In the case of other disorders, it is effective to include drug treatment. For more than 30 years, the metameric method of treatment patented by Dr. Bersenev V.A., which combines acupuncture of gradient zones with the simultaneous administration of micro doses of neuroprotective and neuroregenerative drugs, has been proving its effectiveness. Thanks to this method, the drug not only enters the patient’s body, but is injected into those zones and structures that have lost their functions. This makes it possible to reduce the duration of the medical procedure for small patients to several minutes.
